At the Feb. 15 Regular Meeting of Grimes County Commissioners Court, commissioners approved a request by District Attorney Andria Bender’s office to reallocate $7,200 in unused salary to increase the Crime Victims Assistance Overtime fund by $1,200 and the DA Salaries fund by $6,000. The $7,200 represents the one-month vacancy left by former Assistant District Attorney Courtney Cain, now Madison County DA, and the start date of attorney Tammy Thomas.
According to Investigator John Wren, the DA’s office has used 60-70% of their overtime budget less than six months into the fiscal year. Wren attributed this to more trials with three courts operating now, only two legal assistants to cover three courts and a problem with new management software caused by the software company.

The motion by Commissioner Phillip Cox stipulated the outdoor addition is not to exceed $50,000 and must be in compliance with County policy related to smoking.
Echoing Judge Gary Chaney’s comments at the Feb. 1 commissioner court, Judge Moorman advised the court of the need to allow juries out of the jury room but the potential of coming in contact with victim and defendant families. He also had just learned of a county policy restricting smoking to no less than 15-feet from a door and requested consideration of a waiver for people summoned for jury service.

Located on private property behind Plantersville Town Hall, parts of the foundation are all that remain of the historic Plantersville High School that was built in 1912. Plantersville native, Marilyn Bettes, spent a lot of time researching the school and applying for the THC marker to ensure history was preserved.

Around 10:30 a.m., Feb. 10, Navasota Police Officers responded to a business in the 600 block of South La Salle for reports of a threat. Employees stated, Rosalind McCoy, threatened them over the phone in reference to a charge that was made on her credit card. The charge was reportedly to pay off a loan.
