At the Feb. 1 Regular meeting of the Grimes County Commissioners Court, commissioners tabled two items related to the use of county buildings. The first was the Grimes County Historical Commission (GCHC) request to be allowed to use the old county clerk’s office for office space and storage. The second involved after-hours use of the historic courthouse for a wedding.

According to Male, security-wise, if jurors have to leave their secure area because their restrooms are full, to take a smoke break or for other reasons, they can become exposed to witnesses, victims, and families of both victims and defendants. Legally speaking, a juror approached by one of these individuals could prompt a mistrial.
Read moreSince 2014, the City of Navasota and the Arts Council of the Brazos Valley (ACBV) have provided artists an opportunity to focus solely on their art as participants in the Navasota Artists in Residence (AIR) Program. The current resident artists, Sara Nevius and Siana Smith, are about to wrap up their six-month stay in Navasota but not before exhibiting their work at an open house Friday, Feb. 17. The hours of this free event at the Horlock House Art Gallery & History Museum, 1215 E. Washington Avenue are 4:30-6 p.m. Light refreshments will be served.
Read moreANDERSON – Anderson-Shiro students and staff are able to enjoy great coffee in the nest with the opening of Hootie’s Brew, a coffee shop operated solely by Anderson-Shiro students.
Hootie’s Brew began the brew process Dec. 7, thanks to a $4,100 grant from the Anderson-Shiro Education Foundation.
Teachers, Lauren Polan and Lindsey Young, said the idea originated several years ago from students in Polan’s business class. Polan and Young applied for the grant as a way to teach students business skills. Young teaches Life Skills, and her students are able to thrive from the day-to-day added responsibility of helping with Hootie’s Brew. Her students are responsible for cleaning once the shop closes and breaking down the coffee shop.

BRENHAM – The Bluebonnet Opry House Band takes center stage during the monthly Bluebonnet Opry performance at Silver Wings Ballroom Feb. 16.
Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and the show begins at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $8 each and are sold at the door. A portion of the proceeds benefit Hospice Brazos Valley. Bluebonnet Opry hosts concerts every third Thursday of the month. The Silver Wings Ballroom snack bar will be open serving hamburgers, hot dogs, sodas and adult beverages.
Bluebonnet Opry House Band
The band consists of Gary Brock on bass, Craig Schmidt on the steel guitar, Doug Boggs keeping the rhythm on the drums, Harris Kubos Sr. on fiddle, Wayne Turner on lead guitar and John Dujka on keyboard. Each of the band members also sing. Troy Arndt (Trail Boss Troy) serves as MC and Chip Wied is in charge of the sound board.

She presented her state project that benefits the National Buffalo Soldier Museum in Houston. Funds raised will create additional exhibits at the museum. The meeting was also attended by National Vice President, South Central Region, Catherine Jackson. During the meeting members made valentines to send to State Veterans homes. Members attending include Mackenzie Mayfield, curator; Braxton Mayfield, recording secretary; Bella Proske, corresponding secretary; Scarlett Proske, treasurer; Bonnie Meredith, second vice president; and Reagan Meredith, president.
