IOLA - Wyatt Akers received the James Michael Johnson Memorial scholarship worth $500.
Akers graduated from Iola High School in 2022 with a 3.15 GPA. He attends West Texas A&M University majoring in Ag Business. He anticipates graduating in 2026.

Ferguson was nominated by one of his peers for his kindness and commitment to the school. The nomination stated, “Ferg is a leader among his peers and one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet. But he's also incredibly smart and proactive when it comes to problem solving. If he walks by your classroom and notices you're not looking all that chipper, he will take time (even though he has practically none) to come in and check on you. If what is bothering you is related to a problem, he'll help you brainstorm a solution. He's empathetic and both validates your feelings while also helping you to be optimistic. Iola would not be nearly as positive or productive without Ferg.”

The plaque recognizes the Officers of the Year and their respective law enforcement agencies since 2015 when the custom began. NPD Investigator Travis Mullins was named Officer of the Year for 2022 at the Grimes County Crime Stoppers Law Enforcement Awards Dinner Jan. 28. The plaque will reside with NPD through the end of 2023.
