It was a special day for athletes at the 13th Annual Special Olympics hosted by Navasota ISD March 28at Rattler Stadium. Athletes competed in a variety of events including softball toss, javelin throw, and speed running and walking events. All athletes did a phenomenal job representing their schools. Hydrants and gas main awards
Council approved awarding the Fire Hydrant Replacement Project to Kieschnick General Contractors. Kieschnick’s $440,250 for the Base Bid and Add-Alternate was the lowest of eight bids submitted and received the recommendation of engineering services provider, Bleyl Engineering. Thirty-four fire hydrants currently out of service or missing will be replaced. Public Works Director Jennifer Reyna expects the project will take 60-75 days and without water loss.

Alderman heard discussion about MUD 3 (Fuchs/Knighten MUD) during the regularly scheduled meeting March 20. Intent of the developer is to introduce in the Regular Session of the 88th Legislature of Texas a bill creating and establishing a special district consisting of approximately 852.43 acres including parts of City of Plantersville ETJ (extraterritorial jurisdiction). Alderman don’t believe adequate information was relayed in time to make an informed decision.

Read moreThe trip back to the drawing board paid off for Maredia, Barkat & Rahim Momin at the Thursday, March 23, meeting of the Navasota Planning & Zoning Commission. Their preliminary site plan for the Fly-Away C-Store at 2643 Highway 105 West received the go-ahead from all commissioners with the exception of Dr. John Walla who was absent.
The site plan originally submitted Feb. 23, was deemed to be a convenience store with truck stop components and failed to be approved following strenuous objections from neighboring Pecan Lakes Estates residents. Those objections related to road damage, 18-wheeler overnight parking and an increase in crime.

Groovy Grapes, hosted by Navasota Grimes County Chamber of Commerce, is the largest wine walk in the county. Since 2010, The Arts Council of Brazos Valley has awarded over $80,000 in scholarship funds to deserving Brazos Valley High School seniors pursuing their dreams of a college degree and career in the arts.
