The Bedias Women’s Club annual scholarship recipients for 2020 are: Paige Smith, daughter of Jody and Lyle Smith of Bedias. Paige graduated from Iola and is attending Sam Houston State University this fall. Asa Surface, parents are Morris Surface of Bedias and Amanda Wakefield of Midway.

The Sunday morning service on Aug. 9 was preached by Edward Costello, one of the church deacons, in absence of Rev. Jeff Morgan while he and his family were on vacation. Ed did a wonderful job. A very special person in the services was Hayes Lawrence Baker, born June 4.

It has been a busy week for the Richards Community! School is starting soon, and parents are shopping, checking school lists twice and making plans for their kiddos to return either in person or via remote learning.

And another loss to our list is added. On Monday, June 15, Don lost his dad John Sowell and now, just 57 days later on Monday, Aug. 10, he lost his mom JoAnn Sowell. If you knew this lady, you knew she was the kindest, most caring and sweetest lady on this earth.

Everyone is invited to St. Mary’s Historic German Painted Catholic Church’s 126th Annual Homecoming Bazaar Sunday, Sept. 6, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The layout of the Bazaar will be very different this year - still LOTS of family fun - with all the necessary safety and distancing protocols in place. The big news for this month is that Iola ISD is about to start. I was informed the first day of school will be Tuesday, Aug. 18. I am sure the parents are glad the day has finally arrived and I’m sure some of the students are glad as well. Some of the high school boys were on the football field last week and when I had lunch and spoke with the Mallett’s they said there will be a football season. I hope that still happens.

Our grandson Luke Waitz, son of Dave and Brandi Waitz, has had a busy summer. He learned a lot about living in the country as opposed to a subdivision in Montgomery. First, he learned how to swim the whole length of the pool and back on our Frio trip in June. This week he started taking horse lessons from his Paw-Paw Don Sowell. After a week of the basics he is now riding out in the pasture all by himself. Luke will be entering First Grade this week at Anderson-Shiro. Yes, school starts at the end of the week. I’m so glad his parents are sending him back to school as opposed to home schooling. In most cases, teachers have more patience in teaching a child than parents do. At least that’s how it was when my kids were in school. I had absolutely no patience with doing homework in the evening. And especially now – I can’t even think about helping my grandchildren with homework – especially math. Math these days is not the way I learned it.
