Downtown Navasota will be getting down with the blues at its upcoming “Reds, Wheats & Blues” Festival on Saturday, November 13, from 2-6pm. This year’s Festival takes place all along the downtown area and is an afternoon of wine and craft beer tastings. Great pre-Christmas shopping opportunities will abound in the lovely downtown shops and boutiques, as each location hosts a craft brewery, regional winery or be designated as a non-alcoholic stop.

Grimes County Sheriff Deputy Swank Backhus was promoted to Criminal Investigations Division where he will work under Lt. James Ellis. Backhus, a 2006 Navasota High School graduate, began working for Grimes County as a jailer and dispatcher in 2009. In 2011, he attended and graduated from TEEX Police Academy. From Feb. 2012 through Apr. 2014 he worked the patrol division. Backhus returned to the Grimes County Sheriff’s Office Patrol Division in March of 2018 where he has exceeded the expectations of his colleagues. He was promoted to Investigator Sept. 9. This year marks the 100th anniversary of the creation of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. On Nov. 11, 1921, the iconic memorial on the grounds of the Arlington National Cemetery provided a final resting place for one of America’s unidentified World War I servicemen. Unknowns from World War II and the Korean and Vietnam wars were added in 1958 and 1984.
