First Friday at Fanthorp Inn, 579 S. Main St. in Anderson will be held July 1 from 12-7 p.m. Special guided tours of the inn will be held at noon, 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. This event will include first person interpretation meaning a historical figure will guide guests through their experiences with Henry Fanthorp and his inn. You are invited to follow in the footsteps of Lady Amelia Murray, Queen Victoria’s “Maid of Honour” who traveled extensively through Texas in 1855.

I receive so many emails that sometimes I miss interesting facts. Recently, I read the Veterans Administration has made June national PTSD month and they are working to offer various services to our veterans. Actually, PTSD is not a medical issue only for veterans, there are many factors that can cause post-traumatic stress disorder for individuals. I have known people who suffer from this and it can be very difficult to deal with.

Area friends and family members of Clyde Donald Thomas, 88, were sorry to learn of his death Wednesday, June 8. He was born Aug. 18, 1934, the son of John and Ethel Kirby Thomas, on the family farm in Paint Creek. He and his family lived in a variety of places. He was married to Ann McFarlin and they became parents of four children. They both attended the Martins Prairie Cemetery Association meetings. He was preceded in death by his wife July 30, 2019 and was buried beside her in the Martins Prairie Cemetery. Do remember his children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and other family members in your prayers.

The Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center continues to face a critical shortage of blood and blood products. Over 1,000 units are needed each day to meet the needs of patients in southeast Texas. To help meet this need, the Knights of Columbus Council 4054 will host a blood drive Sunday, June 26 in the St. Stanislaus Parish Hall in Anderson from 8 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. Please sign-up and donate if you are able to at www.commitforlife.org. Enter group code STKR. A pancake breakfast will also be provided that morning so come out and enjoy. The next blood drive will take place Sunday, Aug. 21.

Congratulations to Art Courville on his retirement. He is my neighbor, friend, classmate and former dairyman of Grimes County. I am so happy for him and Barbara Jean. This will make it easier for them to travel to their grandchildren’s, Connor and Kendall, ballgames.

Extreme temps and continued dry weather make the perfect soup for a burn ban imposed in our area. With large grassy and wooded areas, our county is prime real estate for fires, so be smart and follow the ban in place.

There is a burn ban in effect for Grimes County. I traveled to Nashville, Tennessee and they are experiencing the same heat. Their heat doesn’t have high humidity. Stay cool, check on your neighbors, take your trash to the dump etc.
