Read moreSHIRO — Shiro Volunteer Fire Department is planning a derailment exercise Saturday, Nov. 18, to coordinate mock responses to a major disaster. The plans were announced during the Nov. 9, Shiro Town Hall meeting. Shiro VFD Chief Dan Sharron said the exercise is planned from 8 a.m. until noon. He encourages other departments, law enforcement, first responders and more to participate, stating a joint effort is needed when responding to a disaster of that magnitude. He also encourages the community to come witness the training.

The Reds Wheats and Blues Festival, Nov. 11, at the Grimes County VFW celebrated Blues music with an array of bands including a farewell concert from local legend, Tubee and the Touchtones. Also participating in the inaugural concert was local musician Randy Pavlock and his band Twenty Four Seven, Cari Hudson and Good Company from Austin and headliner Shinyribs, also from Austin. A committee is being formed to plan the festival next year with an emphasis on various styles of Blues music.
