Keith Civic Club held their monthly meeting Oct. 26, at Keith Community Center with a small number in attendance. A report was given about the recent garage sale. A good amount of money was raised. This will help with various projects. There was another sale Oct. 28, and more items were sold, and more money raised.

Once upon a time I was in the construction business. Sort of, anyway. This would have been about 20 years ago, and I was part of a mission team with my church. Prior to this endeavor, my construction skills included operating a hammer, a saw, and sometimes a drill. “No experience needed”, they said. “We’ll teach you everything you need to know”, they said. Despite my lack of know-how, I reluctantly agreed to join the team for the building project in Mexico. It wasn’t that I didn’t want to help out, I was just concerned about being a liability instead of an asset. That all changed once we got on site.

Vitex agnus-castus, vitex, is native to Asia and the Mediterranean region. Now common in Grimes County landscapes, it’s believed that vitex came to North America in the 17th century. It is easily recognizable because of its spikes of showy, purple flowers. Bees, butterflies and other insects enjoy the nectar which produces excellent honey. It is usually from 3 to 10 feet tall and may be as wide with twisty multiple trunks. Leaves are olive green and palmately compound. Flowers and leaves are aromatic. Dark brown fruit is a drupe, berry-like. Beautiful and hardy, vitex is prized as a long-lived cut flower. The Texas Department of Transportation, txdot.gov, has recommended it for plantings in the median of some state highways.

Veterans Day, Nov. 11, will be celebrated with a parade, fundraiser drawings for Grimes County VFW Post 4006 Auxiliary and ending with the Navasota Grimes County Chamber of Commerce Reds, Wheats & Blues Festival at the VFW from 3-8 p.m. There will be several bands including Tubie and the Touchtones, Cari Hutson & Good Company, Randy Pavlock, and Shinyribs. The good news for the week, or month, is we are no longer under a burn ban. We have been under one for several months. Just be careful and safe when burning. Iola Food Pantry was open Saturday, Oct. 21. The Pantry is open the third Saturday each month in the Iola Missionary Baptist Church Fellowship Hall from 9-11 a.m. It is open to anyone in need. I understand Bedias Baptist Church, Cross Baptist Church and others helped assist those who came for food.
