Read moreMovie night at Evergreen Baptist Church Thursday, Sept. 30, was well attended. The movie was “Beautifully Broken.” It was about a refugee’s escape, a prisoner’s promise and a daughter’s painful secret converging in a true story of hope. Pizza, popcorn and drinks were served. An offering was collected to help children in Africa. A good sum of money was raised. God bless all that assisted.

Richards 4-H students are no stranger to these meetings, and this month they spent time learning about pumpkins and all things squash. Mandi Wrobleski leads the group and usually teaches subjects such as goat tying, horsemanship, and pecans. But as with any great fall season, pumpkins steal the show. Instead of her usual topics-4-H attendees learned new terms for pumpkins such as Warty Goblin, Jack be Little, and Fairy Tale for pumpkin types.

Read morePortulaca oleracea, purslane, is a highly nutritious annual succulent. Evidence of its use by man was found in archeological sites going back to at least the seventh century BCE. It grows in many parts of the world including Grimes County. Purslane is low-growing, forming dense mats about 6 inches high with a spread of up to 2 feet. The succulent stems and leaves are filled with clear mucilaginous sap. Clear sap is an important identification point as there are similar looking plants with white sap, inedible look-a-likes.

When I told him that I was not sure if I would be setting up trees in all my rooms, he offered to assist me with putting them up. That is sweet of him, but he has not totally convinced me to do this. Read moreThe start of the 2021 school year has proven to be full of success for RISD, with junior high and high school athletes continuing to compete strongly in volleyball and track. The Junior High Cross-Country team won first place at the Burton ISD Meet. The results reflected the dedication to conditioning and endurance from the group of 11 athletes. With the Lady Panthers recently taking first and second in the Navasota freshman and varsity volleyball tournaments, the girls look towards grabbing additional wins against McDade and Burton. RISD Varsity plays against Burton Friday, Oct. 8, at 4:30 p.m.
