The monthly meeting of the Iola-North Zulch Order of the Eastern Star was held Monday, Oct. 25, in North Zulch at the Pyramid Masonic Lodge with good number of members and visitors (approximately 25) present. The covered dish meal was enjoyed by all. Deputy Grand Matron, Dianne Ryder, attended the meeting. She gave the Grand Worthy Matron’s message for the year. There was a good deal of business taken care of as well.

Anderson’s Trunk or Treat was a huge success again. Thank goodness we are able to let our children – young and old – experience a safe and fun Halloween. When I was growing up we didn’t have anything like that. After my dad, Frank Hoffart, closed our grocery store in Dobbin on Halloween night, he would load all us and our friends in the back of his old Ford truck. We would all cram in the bed of the truck – no seat belts back in those days – and he would drive us all over the area. He would come to a house or a group of houses and we would all jump out and go door to door then jump back in. Ahhh, those were the days! Such sweet and fun memories.

First of all, I want to clarify a statement I made regarding the FREE Bingo on Tuesdays at the VFW Post. It appears the new rules do allow for visitors under the age of 18 as long as they are accompanied by an adult or guardian. Commelina communis, dayflower, is an annual seen in Grimes County from spring until frost. Its bright blue flowers, about an inch wide, last one day. They open in the morning and are gone by early afternoon. There are three petals, two blue on top and one smaller white one underneath. A bract at the flower’s base contains a mucilaginous sap which oozes out in a drop when squeezed. One of dayflower’s other names is widow’s tears.
