Iola’s big hitter signs with Celts

Iola senior, Sydney Nevill, signed her National Letter of Intent Dec. 18, to continue her volleyball and academic career at the University of St. Thomas in Houston to play for the Celts. Nevill helped Iola win a state championship in 2023 and was a state runner–up this year. She is the daughter of Michelle Nevill and Perry McElroy. Nevill will begin college in January.

Rain dampens wreaths but not spirits

Rain showers and cloudy skies didn’t dampen the spirits of those attending the fourth annual Wreaths Across America (WAA) ceremony at Navasota’s Oakland Cemetery Saturday, Dec. 14. Grimes County WAA Coordinator Kathy Wells opened the ceremony with the reminder that freedom does not come without a price.

A second life for holiday conifers

During this winter holiday season, many people bring live evergreen plants into their homes according to their tradition. Decorations include Christmas trees, Hanukkah and Kwanzaa wreaths, etc. When the season is over, most of these plants will be put in the trash or set on the curb for cities to pick up and take to a facility where they'll be ground into mulch. There are other things you can do with the plants if they haven't been chemically treated.

Todd Mission new home to Medic 33

In a Special Meeting Dec. 18, Grimes County commissioners voted 4-1 to support the recommendation of St. Joseph Hospital EMS Director Billy Rice to relocate the Stoneham ambulance station to Todd Mission. Pct. 2 Commissioner David Tullos cast the dissenting vote.
