Book drive benefiting Navasota Head Start

The book drive for the children at the Navasota Head Start Program is off and running. With inspiration from the Muddy Water Bookstore and the Navasota Public Library, book donations have started coming in.

The book drive motto is:

Literacy is one of the best gifts you can give a child for Christmas.

In this modern environment of children having increased exposure to the internet, nurturing a love of books is a gift that will last a lifetime.

The Progressive Women of Grimes County is a women’s club that was formed early in 2019 with the main intent of addressing local issues that impact our community. As the Christmas season approaches, a project for the benefit of children felt natural. The Head Start program serves underprivileged children ages 3 to 5, providing them with an early exposure to learning.

The Navasota program has an enrollment of 68 children. Local enthusiasm for this project has already increased our goal from providing a book for each child to providing two. A resident volunteered to make individual book bags, and another is providing coloring books, crayons and treats. Generosity is one of the hallmarks of this close-knit community and it is evident in the support for this meaningful project.

Donations may be dropped off at Muddy Water Bookstore, 102 E. Washington. We are asking for books and toys appropriate for children ages 3 to 5. Note, the store has an incredible children’s section if you are not familiar with current literature for young children. Hint, hint, books make a great gift for the children in your life.

The bookstore carries many childhood favorites. Books build a history and bond between people.

The Saturday, Dec. 14, meeting of the PWGC will be a holiday get to together and wrap up for the book drive. Everyone is invited for hot chocolate and cookies. Mark your calendar and join PWGC, 11 a.m. at Muddy Water Bookstore.
