New business coming to town

Looking back on the memories, many of us can remember businesses that are not in business any longer. Haynie’s Grocery Store is one of those that come to mind. It was once located on Main Street in Richards, was family owned and operated and was a very well-established business back in the day. If my memory serves me correctly, they also had feed. Many of us shopped there or had parents that did, and it seemed to be a very busy store at the time. This is just part of the history of our little town. There were many businesses and memories through the years. Get ready because Richards is once again booming. A new store is opening, and this is good for the future of our little town.

Haynie’s General Store and restaurant is opening July 1. Owners are TJ and Nicki Haynie. This new store is located on Main Street across from the post office. You can’t miss it with its large blinking sign. TJ and Nicki said, “We are so excited and honored to serve Richards. We look forward to seeing familiar faces and making new friends. Come see us at Haynie’s General Store and restaurant. The phone number of this store is 936-851-2525, and will be open Monday-Saturday, 6 a.m. till 7 p.m. Breakfast and lunch will be served 6 a.m. until 2 p.m. They will have daily lunch specials including fish and shrimp on Fridays. The store will also sell gas and groceries. Please stop by and see them.

To all Richards residents, there will be a meeting at the community center (the old bank downtown in Richards) Tuesday, July 9, at 6:30 p.m. Discussion will include trying to start a Richard’s Civic Club. You are invited to join them at the meeting to better our community.

Last week storms roared through our area with heavy winds knocking down limbs, trees and knocking out power for many residents. Richards Volunteer Fire Department responded to a lightning strike to a power pole on CR

A group in Shiro is forming a small group of bridge players, for more information about joining this group call 979-492-9263.

I attended the 125-year birthday celebration at the Grimes County Courthouse. There was music, food, and much fellowship as folks gathered for this very special event. I could not help but wonder how excited Mrs. Oberkamp would have been to see this many people turn out for this event so many years later. She spent so much of her time in her earlier years preparing for the Texas trek and even at times had square dances at the old-time street dances. Blondie Carrol was set up with her delicious cupcakes to celebrate. Everyone knows just how good and beautiful Mrs. Carroll’s wedding cakes are. The cupcakes were no exception. This was a popular booth. It was good to visit with Connie Perry who was also out and about celebrating this special day. My brother Frank Rosenquist and wife Janet and several of my nieces were at the event. A couple of my daughters and their children were also present. My niece Crystal traveled the longest distance visiting from close to Louisiana. Kim Backhus was there with her daughter Ann who had just returned from a school trip in Washington, DC. and traveled even further. Erna Marie Freeman was all smiles as she passed by because her daughter was in town with her for this beautiful celebration. It was a very fun time for everyone.

There will be a Fourth of July Bingo and Ice Cream social at the Roans Prairie Community Center from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. There will be Bingo and prizes. Cards are two for five dollars. Ice Cream is free but bring your favorite toppings. Donations of ice cream are excepted. The event is sponsored by Roans Prairie Community Center, Singleton Community Center and the Shiro Civic Association.

Last but certainly not least, my neighbor is missing her dog. She has looked everywhere for it. If you happen to see a chocolate brown and white spotted spaniel please call me and I will relay the message to her. I have a picture of it. She has been desperately trying to find it her baby.
