Dear Editor,
The Texas Silver-Haired Legislature (TSHL) fully supports and asks for your vote “FOR” PROPOSITION 9 on November 7!
This Texas Constitutional Amendment is necessary to ensure that eligible Teacher Retirement System (TRS) retirees receive a COLA (cost-of-living adjustment).
For MANY long-term retirees, this will be the only COLA increase they have ever received.
All eligible TRS retirees for the proposed COLA are worthy individuals - including bus drivers, teachers, lunchroom staff, janitors, teacher aides, etc. – many of whom draw an annuity less than $1,000/month and are not eligible to receive Social Security.
The Texas Legislature has already set aside the money to fully fund the COLA upfront and generate enough funds without a tax increase. However, the Legislature can only release these funds with voter approval.
The joint resolution to place a proposition for this COLA on the November 7 ballot was fully supported in the Texas House and Senate. They also recognize that a TRS COLA will also benefit Texas businesses and provide a measure of additional economic stimulus to our State.
TSHL worked closely with the Texas Legislature to advocate for older Texans and this specific legislation. We applaud and thank our Legislators for making this benefit available to the retired educational employees who have been so vital to the education of our children and the future of the great State of Texas. Now they need the help and support of Texas voters!
Please vote “FOR” PROPOSITION 9!
The Honorable Sherry Hubbard, EdD TSHL Speaker
