District meeting features local contest winner
Texas Birthday Bash in Navasota looked like fun. Photos posted on Facebook showed packed streets and parking lots of people having a good time. It is fantastic my home town is recognized for their ability to throw a good party.
A few folks and I went to H.E.A.R.T.S. Veterans Museum in Huntsville for a District Meeting. Brenda Storey drove Janis and me. The meeting was a joint gathering with Post and Auxiliary members. This is the yearly Memorial Service for those members who passed away last year. This was my first time to represent the Post 4006 Auxiliary and it was an honor to walk with Jim DeGeorge our Post member to place flowers on the alter. It was good to see so many members from 11 VFW Posts present for this ceremony.
Afterwards, Luke Leman, of Grimes County, read his winning Patriot’s Pen essay to the group. The topic this year was “How Can I Be a Good American.” I said this before, but Luke was only one student away from being a State winner. The audience included his dad, Ben, and brother, James, who was the Post 4006 contest winner for the Voice of Democracy. Luke received awards from the local VFW, District VFW and at the State level.
I am proud of our county students. Abigail Bay of Richards ISD was another winner of the Patriot’s Pen at the local level. Richards ISD has wonderful teachers and a counselor who encourage their students to participate in the VFW Auxiliary contests.
Many posts, auxiliaries and private donors made it possible for the traveling replica of the Vietnam Wall to be brought to the H.E.A.R.T.S Veterans Museum. The dedication is March 27 at 3 p.m. Visitors are welcome to come and see the wall any day from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. They are working on getting lighting at the sight. The Museum is also open for visitors for a fee.
