Read moreWhile eating dinner with some folks recently, the 1977 Randy Newman song, “Short People,” found its way into the conversation. Probably because I was bemoaning sitting in commissioners court for 2-3 hours in chairs clearly NOT designed with all of Grimes County’s citizens, employees and media reps in mind. Most at the table remembered the song but some had never heard it before. Just in case you haven’t, here are a few choice lines:

Nevertheless, it always eventually functioned as designed - it closed without a hitch and the door would lock. And it opened just as often, albeit with some effort.
Read moreAs I thought about my column topic this week, I realized the last two were about apathy or indifference in one form or another. Unfortunately, I find myself going down that path again. What can I say? The aftermath of Covid and bad government policies have presented a plethora of material to work with!
Read moreBy now, you have no doubt heard about the slapping debacle from the recent Oscar night. Just to recap, emcee Chris Rock made a joke at the expense of actress Jada Pinkett Smith, wife of actor Will Smith. After briefly laughing it off, Will Smith was drawn by an overwhelming desire to take immediate action in defense of his apparently defenseless wife. They can be overwhelming at times. That being said, I think I’d rather be overwhelmed than underwhelmed when it comes to the people who want to spend my money, and underwhelmed is the best word I can come up with to describe the Navasota city council election Saturday, May 7.
Read moreHaving recently had visiting teenagers, I was reminded of how late a person can sleep when they put their mind to it, particularly during that time of life before your body has been conditioned to wake up at a certain time of day. Well, give it a few years, sleepy teenager. My pesky body clock has prevented me from sleeping late for 20 years. No matter that it is a Saturday, or a holiday, or a vacation day. Whenever an opportunity avails itself when I can sleep in, the internal alarm goes off at 6 a.m. and there is nothing I can do about it. I suppose one might say I am “woke.”
