A Grimes County K-9 officer uncovered various narcotics during a search at the Texas Department of Criminal Justice Center Luther Unit in Navasota June 16. Deputy Pavlock and K-9 Hank were dispatched to the Luther Unit when a vehicle located on prison property refused consent of a vehicle search. The occupants claimed they stopped on prison property so they could fly a drone. Consent was requested and denied.

Grimes County commissioners approved the floor plan for a new business annex behind the Grimes County Justice and Business Center and authorized MBC Management to move forward with the design phase. The motion to approve the 16,345 square foot Option 2 floor plan at Hie June 21 Regular Meeting passed 4-1 with Commissioner David Tullos abstaining.

ANDERSON-A“monster” that terrorized a family for years received a life sentence by a Grimes County Grand Jury June 23. Thirty-six-year-old Leslie Eugene Young Jr., also known as LJ Young, was found guilty of Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon. Although the Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon charge was the easier of the charges to prosecute, the jury heard testimony of the family through during the sentencing phase of the trial.

The sport of pickleball is taking over Navasota with several avid players helping to grow the sport and newcomers learning the popular game. Navasota Pickleball Association made history with the inaugural Navasota “Doubles Day” Pickleball Tournament at Navasota High School June 24. The tournament attracted players from as far away as New Braunfels.

The Navasota City Council launched its three-phase visitor-friendly wayfinding sign project with a unanimous vote at the June 26 Regular Meeting. The motion to approve the Scope of Work from National Signs, LLC for City Wide Wayfinding Phase 1 will utilize $248,004 from hotel/ motel occupancy tax (HOT funds). State law specifies HOT funds be used only to promote tourism or projects and events which will bring visitors to a community.
