Read moreArctium lappa and the smaller A. minus are similar plants known as burdock used in the same way. Found in Central Texas pastures, ditches and along roadsides, they are biennial, having a two-year lifecycle. The first year produces a taproot 1 to 3 feet deep and a rosette of large wavy heart-shaped leaves, 1 ½ to 2 feet long, that are close to the ground. The second year produces the stalk, smaller leaves, round spikey purple flowers grouped in clusters and fruits. In late summer the fruits mature becoming sharp burs attaching to any critter that brushes against them. The plant can be 4 to more than 6 feet tall with a spread of more than 3 feet. The name burdock comes from combining the French word burre, meaning bur and old English dock, meaning large leaves.

Read moreArea and county residents were shocked and saddened to learn of the death of Jim-Bob Allen Trant Tuesday, Jan. 12, at Baylor Scott and White Hospital in College Station. A celebration of his life was held Monday, Jan. 18, at Zion Lutheran Church in Anderson with visitation beginning an hour before the service. Rev. Richard Lamb officiated the service. Burial was in the Allen family cemetery in the Piedmont Community.
