High Point experiences mobile learning

Navasota Independent School District’s High Point Elementary campus was one of 30 schools across Texas selected to host the Texas Mobile STEM Lab.

In partnership with the Texas Education Agency, Learning Undefeated operates the Texas Mobile STEM Laboratory, a custom outfitted STEM learning space that offers engaging, immersive, hands-on STEM experiences for students and teachers, teaching science, technology, engineering and mathematics topics and skills.

Over a 3-day span, Wednesday, Jan. 19 through Friday, Jan. 21, over 400 kindergarten through fifthgrade students at High Point Elementary were able to board the Texas Mobile STEM Lab where they are able to work cooperatively with other students to design a STEM project activity developed by Learning Undefeated, with support from the Texas Education Agency (TEA).

Students were read the story of the Three Little Pigs told from the perspective of the “Big Bad Wolf.” Instructors Katie Askelson and Desurae Matthews challenged the students to design and construct a home that could withstand the powerful sneeze of the wolf.

Students, separated in groups, were allotted a budget to purchase items such as paper, scissors, popsicle sticks, pipe cleaners, glue etc. During the planning stage, students designed the structure and utilized math skills to create a project budget. Once the home was constructed, a fan was used to simulate the wolf’s sneeze and test the homes durability.

Robyn Thomas, a teach er at High Point, was excited about the opportunity for the students. “I think the students have really enjoyed it. It is connecting Science with that real-life engaging experience. With COVID they are not able to go take field trips, so this was being able to bring something to them where they can have this engagement.”
