Sniffing out crime

It was a One Dog Night at the Jan. 6 meeting of Grimes County Crime Stoppers and the one dog everyone wanted to meet was “Hank,” the newest addition to the Grimes County Sheriff’s Office K9 Division!

The first-ever “swearing in” of a law enforcement animal was witnessed by Crime Stoppers members and many of the 30-plus donors to the organization’s recent fundraiser to provide training for Hank and handler, Sgt. Steven Siracusa.

The K9 Project was launched mid-August to raise $6,500 for training Sgt. Siracusa with a new dog in both narcotics detection and tracking in the wake of the impending retirement of Tweaker, his longtime “partner.” The response from residents inside and outside Grimes County exceeded expectations, and in record time.

The funds remaining after training costs were paid have been earmarked for Hank’s needs, one of which is new body armor. Only 15-months old, Hank has some time to go before he can fill the “shoes,” rather the vest, of his predecessor Tweaker.

No, Hank didn’t raise his paw or bark in response to an oath but he sports a shiny new badge on his collar. Sgt. Siracusa received a handwritten certificate created and presented by Sheriff Don Sowell and the sentiments expressed provide moving insight into the bond between animal and handler:

“I will lay down my life for you and expect nothing in return but love. I protect my officer with my life and, if necessary, I will take a bullet in his place.”

“I am sent in to find lost children or fugitives on the run. I may be called on to find drugs, weapons or bombs.”

“I am the first one in and the last to leave. I am the nose and ears of my officer. I will protect and serve him.”
