Murder suspect apprehended quickly

A Navasota man, 37-year-old Leon Burrell Jr., is in custody and charged with the murder of Navasota High School Class of 1995 alumni Clifton Love, 45, of College Station.

On Wednesday, July 14, at approximately 8:10 p.m., Navasota Police, Navasota Fire Department and St. Joseph EMS responded to a male with a gunshot wound at the Laredo Heights Apartment complex, on the 500 block of Laredo Street.

The victim, Love, suffered a single gunshot wound to the chest and was lying on the ground when officers arrived. He was air-lifted to St. Joseph Hospital in Bryan. A female was also transported for minor injuries but refused treatment. Navasota Police Chief Shawn Myatt stated her injuries were not related to the crime.

Navasota Police and Grimes County District Attorney Investigators identified the shooter as Burrell who fled the scene in a tan colored Buick sedan. At approximately 4:15 a.m., Navasota Investigators were notified that Love succumbed to his injury and a murder warrant was issued for Burrell.

Navasota Investigators with the assistance of a Texas Parks and Wildlife Department Game Warden continued to process the scene on the morning of July 15. They received information about the location of the suspect’s vehicle (tan Buick) and located it on the 500 block of East Dickson Street in Navasota. A search warrant for the vehicle was obtained and it was processed.

Navasota Police and agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF) began receiving tips and launched a multi-hour search outside of the county that later returned to Navasota.

At 5:10 p.m., Thursday, July 15, Navasota Police Officers with the assistance of ATF conducted a traffic stop on the 700 block of Foster Street in Navasota. Burrell was the passenger in the vehicle and was arrested without incident. The female driver of the vehicle was interviewed and released. A juvenile passenger was also released.

Burrell was charged with first-degree murder and booked into the Grimes County Jail. Myatt said other charges are pending. Burrell is being held on….

A motive for the shooting or the type of weapon used in the murder has not been released. Navasota Police Department is urging anyone with information related to the murder investigation to contact the Criminal Investigations Division, 936-825-6124.

Navasota Police also want to thank everyone who submitted tips leading to the successful capture of Burrell in less than 24 hours of the shooting.
