Pitcher Eppler receives league honor
Tyler Eppler’s best pitching effort this minor-league baseball season resulted in a league honor.
The Navasota High School graduate earned his lone victory June 9 through 10 games as of June 30 for the Washington Nationals’ Triple A affiliate.
The Rochester Red Wings right-hander allowed one hit in seven scoreless innings against Lehigh Valley and tied his season high of five strikeouts. The 28-year-old was named the Triple A East Pitcher of the Week.
Eppler, who started eight times, had an overall 1-5 record and 8.40 earned run average.
He is in his third season at the Triple A level, having played previously for the Pittsburgh Pirates affiliate.

Anderson-Shiro High graduate Josh Mancuso had a 2-1 record and 2.70 ERA in five pitching appearances for the Acadiana Cane Cutters of the summer Texas Collegiate League. The Nicholls State University left-hander earned a win June 29 by allowing three hits and striking out a season-high four in six scoreless innings against Baton Rouge. His first victory also was against Baton Rouge.
Men’s bass fishing
Out of Anderson-Shiro, Colton Spinks teamed with Logan Stewart to place 71st in the Abu Garcia College Fishing’s Lake O’ the Pines event. The Sam Houston State University pair caught four fish.
Women’s track and field
Jacksonville College freshman Fabiola Hernandez competed in the 1,500- and 5,000-meter runs. The Anderson-Shiro product ran a personal best of 22 minutes, 28.85 seconds in the East Texas Invitational, just her second time running the 5,000 during a meet. Hernandez competed for the cross-country team during the fall.
