Owls remain perfect
HEMPHILL- The Anderson-Shiro Owls passed another test as they notched their first win in District 12-3A Division II and remained unbeaten on the season with a 35-32 win over the Hemphill Hornets.
The Owls (6-0,1-0) received another great effort from senior running back Zacarrius Haynes. He carried the ball 29 times for 196 yards and four touchdowns. The Owls rushed for 290 yards in the game.
Cole Werner contributed with 71 passing yards and a touchdown.
Anderson-Shiro allowed 305 yards on defense, 198 on the ground and 107 through the air. Standing out for the Owl defense was senior Chad Roebuck with 10 tackles, four tackles for a loss, a sack and an interception. Shyheim Jones had a great game with nine tackles, three tackles for loss, a fumble recovery and one pass break up. Jones also rushed for 47 yards and had a two-point conversion.
“I was really proud of the team for overcoming adversity and getting the big district opening win on the road,” explained Owl head coach Brad Hodges. “Anytime you travel that far and play a team as good as Hemphill it makes you nervous, but our guys responded in a big way. It was an exciting game and I was pleased with the way we executed.”
The Owls have another huge matchup hosting New Waverly Friday, Oct. 18, at 7:30 p.m. “This week will be another tough game against a New Waverly team that has improved tremendously,” said Hodges. “We look forward to having a big crowd to help us pull out the victory.”
Hemphill travels to face #3 Newton Friday, Oct. 18, at 7:30 p.m.
