Navasota Blues Review this Saturday

The Grimes County Mobile Food Bank will be serving county residents Thursday, Aug. 8, from 10 a.m. till noon at the Expo Center in Navasota. All county residents are eligible to participate. Proof of residency is required.

The Navasota Blues Review will be held at the Junction Dancehall, TX-6 Business in Navasota, Saturday, Aug. 10, from 5 p.m. until 11 p.m. The four-band concert lineup includes Paul James Band at 6 p.m.; Randy Pavlock & Twenty Four Seven at 7:15 p.m.; Eugene Eugene at 8:30 p.m. and the one and only Tubie and the Touchtones at 9:45 p.m. Barbecue sandwiches and tamales will be sold by the Navasota and Anderson Knights of Columbus. Admission is $15 and will benefit the Navasota Foundation for community projects.

The week of July 8, Ann Mitchell and the Charm & Sewing 4-H Club members Torian Fair, Chyna, Iyana, and JeMoreya Warren went to Prairie View A&M University for the 4-H Junior Leadership Lab. These members got to know many other 4-H members, learned the 4-H pledge (challenge was to say it forward and backward), learned teamwork, constructive work and made bags for the homeless out of t-shirts. The week focused on learning about agriculture, farming constructive work, teamwork, working with one another, budgeting money and yoga. They traveled to a goat farm where they were able to learn about the help of the animal as well as how to care for it. Another thing they learned was a game called the five rings. Each of the rings had a meaning, attitude, communication, leadership, decision making and stress relief. The week ended Friday night with a backyard barbecue with KBTX Channel 3 News. They asked the group what they learned during the week and how they used teamwork within 4-H. Another question asked was how 4-H started for the Charm and Sewing group. Ann told them that her great-grandmother along with a close friend of hers created the group to allow young children such as herself to learn different traits to better themselves. Being in this club is not only allowing children to learn different things but it is also giving them the opportunity to get a scholarship that will one day help pay for their college tuition.

In mid-July, Anderson-Shiro FFA attended the 91st Annual Texas FFA Convention in Fort Worth. Ann Mitchell took a week’s vacation to accompany the group. The group attended several fun events including Six Flags Over Texas Hurricane Harbor, a Talent Show where Tyler Bell participated, the convention dance, ate at the Cattlemen’s Restaurant at the Stockyards, had a Pizza Party, attended a Casey Donahew Concert and the Rodeo where Zane Moriarty, Brice Beene and Tyler Bell participated. Tyler made it to the Finals. The group also attended leadership workshops all week and Delaney Pavelock participated in the Agriscience Fair. Abigail Olguin took part in the Spanish Creed and McKenna Holloway was in the Speaking Development event. At the convention Holloway and McKenna Pavelock each received the $20,000 Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Scholarship and Anna Welch received the $10,000 Richard Wallrath Educational Foundation Scholarship.

I can’t speak highly enough about 4-H. Our daughter Ashleigh joined 4-H in the third grade and continued through her senior year. When she was old enough, she also joined the FFA. These two organizations teach leadership skills in any field you choose. You don’t have to show animals to be in 4-H – there are all kinds of directions you can go. Registration for the 2019-2020 year opens Aug. 15. You must go online to 4-H Connect to http://texas.4honline.com to register. Please note that all 8-year-olds in the third grade who are starting 4-H this year must wait until Sept. 1 or later to register on 4-H Connect.

Two Anderson community members died this past week, Ann Thomas and Pearl Busa. Ann is the wife of Clyde Thomas and mother and mother-in-law of Julie and Geoff Horn. Pearl is the mother and mother-in-law of Betty and Tony Pavlock. Our “old-timers” are slowly going away. Prayers and condolences go out to these families.
