Lemonade war a sweet success
ANDERSON-Third-graders at Anderson-Shiro Elementary school turned a sour batch of lemons into a sweet success in their annual lemonade war, Tuesday, May 21.
The students participate in the one-day sale and raise as much money as they can to donate to a charity or nonprofit organization. This year the lemonade sales reached a new high with totaling $1,794.19 raised.
In the five-year history of the event proceeds of the lemonade war have allowed students to donate 6,553.49 to local charities.
Charities that have benefited from the lemonade war include Navasota Animal Shelter, Anderson Baptist Church Food Pantry, Anderson Sunshine Center, Ronald McDonald House, the American Red Cross and Family Promise Homeless Shelter.
Earning bragging rights this year are Mrs. Cawthorn’s class with their stand “ Sweet Texas Lemonade.” They raised $709.65 buy selling regular and black cherry lemonade, jumbo Pixi Stix, chips and brownies.
Mrs. Wagnor’s class’s “Wild West Wild Lemonade” raised $605.89. They sold regular and strawberry lemonade, western shaped sugar cookies, Jolly Ranchers, brownies and Blow Pops.
Mrs. Oller’s class raised $478.65 with “Best in the Business Lemonade.” Their stand sold strawberry and half-and-half lemonade, lemon cookies and brownies.
Students had to earn $5 to invest into the business and become part owners. Each student pitched in their income to become owners and operators of their classroom business.
Throughout the year students learned key business skills such as marketing, budgeting, counting money, sales, and about volunteering and charities.
