Affordable housing available for veterans
I am asking your assistance to identify any veterans in the Navasota, Grimes County area who need affordable rental housing with the potential opportunity for homeownership. I’m pretty sure these persons probably don’t read this newspaper, or any other, but you may know of someone who fits that description. If so, contact me either through this newspaper or the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Navasota.
New conditions have been found to be associated with Agent Orange. They are bladder cancer, hypertension and Parkinson’s like symptoms. A bill adding these to the existing list of presumptive conditions related to Agent Orange has been introduced as H.R. 2201.
For you ladies, it has been announced that the first female fighter pilot has been nominated for a second star. Brig. Gen. Jeannie Leavitt was among 23 general officers nominated for promotion to Major General. She became the first female F-15 pilot in 1993. Since then, she has logged more than 3,000 flight hours, including more than 300 combat hours.
The Brazos Valley Submarine Veterans group is looking for new members. This organization started in 2015, with seven members and then grew to as many as 26 members. They know that there are other submarine veterans in the area and would like to talk to them. There will be a National Convention in Austin, Texas, Aug. 14, through the 20, and the Brazos Valley Base is asking that you keep these dates and place on your calendar.
Here are some other dates to mark on your calendar. First off, there will be a National Day of Prayer at the Grimes County VFW in Navasota at 7 p.m., May 2.
On May 27, a Memorial Day Service will be held at the same location at 4 p.m.
Then on Flag Day, June 14, 6:30 p.m., there will be a flag retirement ceremony in Reflections Park, behind the VFW hall. Following that, there will be a dance inside starting at 7:30 p.m. featuring the Koka Kola Cowboyz. The VFW is hoping for a large turnout for all these patriotic events.
I, personally, am asking that if you are a military veteran that you join and get involved in any veteran organization that you qualify for. Our government believes in numbers, so let’s make our veterans’ group numbers grow so we can get the governments attention as to what we need and want. Thank you for your service to our country and may God bless Texas and the USA!
