Military exhibit display Nov. 10-11
IOLA — Take a journey through history this Veterans Day with Mesa Military Exhibits at Iola Community Center Nov. 10-11.
Tom Bennett, Iola class of 1963, has a collection of military memorabilia he has been collecting for 60 years. For the first time, he is opening his collection to educate the public. Although injuries sustained playing football prevented Bennett from serving in the military himself, he understands the value of veterans having brothers, uncles and other families who served.
Bennett participates in local gun shows and has bought and sold throughout the years. While looking at his massive collection that he keeps in storage, he realized it should be used to educate the public. His dream of a public display was halted for over a year and a half as he battled colon cancer.
The extensive collection dates back to the 18th century and covers Early Americana, Old West, Civil War, World War I and II, Vietnam, Korean, Gulf War and more. There will be various military uniforms, weapons, ammunition, historical newspapers and magazines and more. Educational resources will also be displayed highlighting data from each war.
Veterans, students, law enforcement and first responders are welcome to view the collection for free. Viewing for the general public is $5.
The collection is available for viewing at Iola Community Center, 7264 Main Street, Iola, Texas 77861.
