Pirates steal a win from Bulldogs
CHILTON - The #8 Chilton Pirates sailed past the Iola Bulldogs, 22-38, at Chilton’s Featherston Field Oct. 27.
Chilton set sail scoring the first two touchdowns on a pair of runs. Successful kicks gave the Pirates an early 14-0 lead.
Iola responded with a quarterback keeper by Tyler Elliot. The conversion failed leaving the Bulldogs trailing 6-14.
Chilton answered quickly returning the ensuing kickoff for another touchdown. The extra point extended their lead, 21-6, with 6:30 left in the second quarter.
The Pirates added another score before halftime on a touchdown pass, to carry a 28-6 lead into the locker room.
Chilton continued to sail in the second half launching another air attack to extend their lead 35-6.
Iola unleashed their offense in the second half showing a lot of fight. Elliot scored on another quarterback keeper, his second touchdown of the game. Austin Calvillo ran in the conversion, closing the gap, 35-14, with 5 minutes remaining in the third quarter.
The Bulldogs staved off the Pirate attack holding them to a field goal with 30 seconds left in the third quarter.
Trailing 14-38, Iola made one final push. Cooper Morgan attacked the Pirate running back forcing a fumble. Blake Bennet picked up the loose ball and returned it for a 40-yard scoop-and- score finalizing the scoring.
Iola (6-3, 2-2) host Bremond (6-3, 3-1) Friday, Nov 3, for senior night at Bulldog Stadium. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.
