Stylish self-storage comes to Navasota
In its last meeting of 2022, Navasota’s Planning and Zoning Commission (P&Z) met Thursday, Dec.8 and approved the preliminary site plan for a self-service storage facility on the city’s west side. The site plan was submitted by TRB Squared, LLC, for 3 acres at 906 Fairway Drive legally described as Fly Away Field. Two commissioners were absent but a quorum was present and approval was unanimous.
Travis Baker with TAC Engineering, LLC, responded in detail to drainage-related questions while TRB developer Troy Baker discussed facility details. According to Troy, there will be no on-site office. Rentals will be negotiated online with storage unit locks available through a kiosk.
Troy said, “In that first phase (six buildings) there are going to be 216 units. If you look at the building cross-sections, there is a hallway in the center of the building. The interior will be climate controlled and on the exterior there will be non-climate controlled.”
Baker said the footprint of the back three buildings will not change but the ratio of climate controlled and non-climate controlled will be determined by demand.
The storage facility will feature a mix of chain link and wrought iron fencing, security cameras and ample landscaping. The façade on the Fairway Drive entrance will be constructed with a faux stone wainscot over metal siding.
Chairman Randy Peters commented on the uniqueness of the stone façade and Development Services Director Lupe Diosdado said, “They really went above and beyond in this design to accommodate the spirit of the ordinance and our design standards.”
In another matter related to design standards, a resident used the public comment time to ask city staff and P&Z to review the City’s design standards related to drive-thru lanes at fast food restaurants.
Citing the design of the six vehicle drive-thru lane at Jack-in-the-Box currently under construction on SH 105 E., the resident considers it a matter of public safety that there is no room to exit in case of emergency, or for any other reason, once in line given the proximity to CR 425 and the slope.
