Rattlers unable to overcome turnovers
MADISONVILLE- Navasota head coach Casey Dacus stressed ball security entering the game against the Madisonville Mustangs, but the Rattlers turned the ball over five times in the 43-21 loss.
The Mustangs scored four times and opened a 23-0 first half lead. Armando Lee Juarez II rushed for a 5-yard score and threw a 53-yard touchdown pass to Tyrese Brown. Brown also had a 1-yard touchdown carry.
Kelvin Martinez connected on two first-half field goals good for 42 and 36 yards.
The Rattlers lone score came on a 36-yard run by La’Darrin Thomas.
Navasota came out swinging in the second half scoring 14-unanswered points. The Rattlers scored on a 29-yard pass from Zack Dyer to Thomas.
Navasota defensive lineman Ja’Eric Beasley recovered an errored snap on a Madisonville punt attempt in the endzone for his first varsity touchdown. “I wouldn’t be the player I am without coach Fischer. He taught me how to do the swim move, the squeeze and the cut in,” said Beasley.” Those defensive moves have made Beasley a force on defense.
A costly personal foul penalty cost Navasota in the third quarter. The penalty gave Madisonville a first down after the defense forced a punting situation. The Mustangs capitalized with a 22-yard pass to Garrett Johnson.
Navasota never regained its momentum and Madisonville scored twice more in the fourth quarter on runs of 20 and 3-yards.
“Right now I see a bunch of guys trying really hard, but as soon as something negative happens our shoulders drop and it looks like everyone is looking around for someone to make a play instead of grabbing the bull by the horns and making a play,” explained Dacus.
Navasota was positive in the postgame huddle knowing that district play begins Friday. Seniors spoke to each other about not listening to negative criticism and being prepared to work harder heading into district.
Navasota will travel to Houston to take on Furr in the District 12-4A opener, Friday, Sept. 27, at 7 p.m. Madison-ville will play at Mexia Friday, Sept. 27, at 7:30 p.m.
