Rattler JV wins run game
Navasota junior varsity held a tough running attack at bay and unleashed their own ground game to defeat Bellville 22-14, remaining undefeated on the season.
The JV Rattlers (3-0) pounded the ball for 181 rushing yards and attacked through the air for 72. Sophomore Grayson Munoz accounted for Navasota’s first-half scoring with a 2-yard touchdown run in the first quarter and 11-yard run in the second. He pounded in both conversion attempts to give Navasota a 16-6 lead at halftime. Cameron Burrell Jr. capped the Rattler scoring in the third on a 7-yard run.
“Offensively we knew we wanted to run the ball this week against a wellcoached Bellville team,” said Navasota Head Coach Grant Glendening. “We knew if we could keep it out of their hands, our chances of winning would increase tremendously.”
Glendening credited Munoz and Burrell on hard-nosed rushing. “They carried the load offensively and pounded the ball inside the tackles very efficiently,” he said of the duo.
“Jace Jablonski found ways to contribute with his passing and scrambling to keep drives alive. Jaxson Bowman stood out catching all three targets and having a great game of blocking. Ariel Arevalo was asked to be the lead blocker on many occasions and did a great job,” said Glendening.
Facing a dominant rushing attack, Glendening said his defensive line and linebackers did a great job. He said the defensive line was led by Kentrevion Taylor while the linebacking crew of Robert Reed, Munoz and Christian Gullian held a strong offense to only 14 points. “We have been really proud of our guys on defense, flying around and playing together as a complete unit.”
Bellville scored its points in the first and third quarters, with the successful conversion in the third.
Navasota plays at Huffman- Hargrave Thursday, Sept. 14, at 5 p.m.
