Navasota 39, Smithville 28;
On Tuesday, the Rattlers traveled to Smithville and came away with a tough 39-28 win. It was a grind it out kind of game with seven lead changes with neither team ever taking control until late in the fourth quarter.
Navasota held the Tigers to just 7 of 47 shooting from the field for 14.8% and forced 37 turnovers.
Junior post Jakayla Jones recorded another double-double with 19 points and 18 rebounds.
“Anytime you can go into Smithville and come out with a win it’s a great thing. Our kids gave a great effort, especially on the defensive end. It wasn’t pretty, but we will take it,” said Navasota Head Coach Tommy Gates.

Navasota 46, Giddings 35;
The Rattlers returned home Friday for the first time in two weeks and took on a hot Giddings squad. Navasota scored the game’s first points and never trailed. The Big Blue held leads of 14 and 16 points in the second half but could never completely put the Buffaloes away. Giddings outrebounded the Rattlers 47-42.
Senior forward Sha’Dimon King led all scorers with 15 points. Jakayla Jones, Nala Richardson and Cookie Leigh each added seven points each. Tamia Dailey hit two three-point shots to finish with six points while Taniaya Warren and Mikayla Collins added two each.
“It was nice to get back to the friendly confines of Rattler gym. It seems like forever since we played a home game. Once again, our intensity on the defensive end was outstanding. Giddings earned every point they got. I was proud of our kids and the way they stayed focused the entire game,” said Gates.
The two victories improve the Rattlers district record to 4-1 after the first round of games. They remain in striking distance of undefeated LaGrange who are 5-0. The Lady Leopards come to Rattler gym Friday, Jan. 31. Navasota hosted Caldwell Tuesday, Jan. 28, (results were not available at press time).
