Castillo scores 10 goals in tournament
CAMERON – Navasota’s lady strikers are off to a hot start fresh off a second-place finish at the Cameron Tournament Jan. 11-13.
The Lady Rattlers finished 3-1-1, falling to Little River Academy in the championship game, 1-0. Jamie Palafox had three saves in the loss.
Navasota (7-2-1) began the tournament with a 4-0 win over rival Madisonville. Mayra Castillo scored all four goals with assists from Mariah Guevara and Jocelyn Santoy. Palafox denied three shot attempts and Leeyah Abercrumbia had a save.
Jarrell built a 2-0 halftime lead, but Castillo struck for two goals in the second half to tie the game. She was assisted by Guevara on both goals. Navasota Head Coach Trace Humphries credited Piper Alexander for her outstanding defense throughout the game.
The Lady Rattlers were a goal better than Waco Connally on Friday pulling out a 3-2 win. Castillo scored Navasota’s three goals with assists from Guevara and Stephanie Padron.
On championship Saturday, Navasota defeated Cameron 1-0 in the semifinals. Castillo scored the lone goal on an assist by Yesenia Gomez. Palafox had four saves.
Navasota played at Madisonville Jan. 17 (results were not available at press time). The Lady Rattlers host Smithville Jan. 20, at 5:15 p.m. and travel to Lorena Jan. 24.
