BOBBY JOE NICHOLS
1932 – 2022
Bobby Joe Nichols, 89, of Washington County, was born July 12, 1932, to Clyde and Minny Nichols of Irving.
Bob, as he was referred to by friends and family, left this world on Sunday, May 8, 2022, leaving behind his wife of 38 years, Mattie Scales Nichols; son Colt Nichols and wife Kinsey Burch-Nichols of College Station; grandchildren Ethan Burch, Nora Nichols and Nolan Nichols of College Station; nieces and lifelong friends.
Bob served his country valiantly as a pilot in the U.S. Marine Corps, serving in both Korean and Vietnam wars. Bob’s favorite plane was the F4U Corsair and in his later years, he would often recount his love of flying by reliving stories from his combat days.
As a civilian, Bob worked for the U.S. Postal Service as a Post Master for 32 years (where he would later meet his wife Mattie). Like his father, he joined the Masonic Lodge as a free Mason, a title he was proud to represent. Bob enjoyed the outdoors and could often be found fishing, hunting or playing 18 holes of golf. His biggest passion perhaps was his love of collecting and selling guns and knives. Bob was an active member of the Houston Gun Collectors Association where he made many lifelong friends he considered his second family.
Bob is preceded in death by his parents and brothers William and Clyde Nichols.
No funeral was held per his wishes.
