Third time a charm for Presbyterian meeting

Navasota’s First Presbyterian Church is moving forward in faith that the ‘elements’ will not cause the cancellation of their upcoming Presbyterian Meeting - the first ever to be held at the Navasota church - at 302 Nolan Street, Saturday, March 18.

The church was twice scheduled to host this all-important meeting in its 157-year history but both times, events beyond the congregation’s control caused the meetings to be canceled. The first cancellation was due to the yellow fever epidemic in the mid-1800s and the second cancellation was prompted by torrential rains in Navasota in the 1900s which caused the church to flood.

The Presbytery is the administrative body representing the churches in the district and meets three times a year. Up to 200 pastors and elders from the 88 churches and 39 counties in southeast Texas, including Houston, which make up the Presbytery of New Covenant are expected to attend.

The mission statement of the Presbytery is “Confessing Jesus Christ as Lord; Connecting one another in ministry; Challenging one another for mission.”

Navasota First Presbyterian Church Pastor Matt Morse said, “The purpose of the tri-annual meetings is to fulfill that mission, as Presbyterians from all over the area come together to worship God, break bread, and share the exciting things happening in congregations and in the mission field throughout the region. As a host church, it is also an opportunity to energize and mobilize the members and friends of FPC, as well as a chance to show off the city of Navasota to our guests.”
