Mount Calvary update gets P&Z OK
The Navasota Planning and Zoning Commission approved the updated final site plan submitted by Mount Calvary Baptist Church, 508 Peeples Street, at a Regular Meeting Thursday, Sept. 22. Approval was contingent upon inclusion of the sidewalk which was left off the updated plan. The 106-year old Mount Calvary Baptist Church first came before P&Z Oct. 28, 2021, requesting a Conditional Use permit as well as approval of their preliminary site plan. With the existing structure being demolished, the permit was required in order to construct a new place of worship. Churches are a conditional use in residential districts.
P&Z approved the permit and site plan on condition that landscaping be added and the parking lot grading be modified to minimize runoff onto Peeples. City council approved the permit and site plan Nov. 8 with the added condition that the building be demolished within one year of completion of the new sanctuary.
Thursday night, Development Services Director Lupe Diosdado advised commissioners that a new architect had been hired and the site plan updated.
Diosdado said, “What did change is the building and the elevation. Per our ordinance, those changes have to be approved again. The previous design had all of the office doors opening into the sanctuary and they felt a hall way to keep the noise level down during the service would be better.”
In other action, commissioners approved the minutes of the Sept. 8 meeting. The meeting may be viewed in its entirety at https://www.navasotatx.gov/ planning-zoning-commission.
