Grimes County Amateur Radio group hosts emergency practice
Saturday, June 22 is Amateur (Ham) Radio Field Day in the United States and Canada.
Grimes County Amateur Radio Group (KG-5PLK) will practice emergency preparedness techniques by making radio contacts without the use of conventional power or antenna sources.
This year the event will take place in the pavilion of August Horst Recreation Park, 104 Veterans Memorial Dr. in Navasota, from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m.
Those interested in amateur radio are welcome to attend and find out more about what the Grimes County Radio Group does.
During the recent storm that hit overnight Sunday, June 16, the group played a vital role in assisting with communication to workers that were removing trees from county roadways on Texas State Highway 90 and 30.
Steve Austin a member of the radio group said that with the recent transition to digital radios some of the workers in the field were unable to hear commands, so he was able to assist with communication between the workers and the engines.
The event is free and open to the public.
