Independence Day celebration Feb. 26-27

The 10th Annual Plantersville Crawfish Festival and Cookoff will be held Saturday, Apr. 30, beginning at 11 a.m. at 19318 FM 1774 in Plantersville.

Texas Independence Day Celebration will be held Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 26-27, at Washington on the Brazos, 23400 Park Road 12, in Washington. The event is free and will include live music, food vendors, demonstrations, quilting etc.

Mark your calendars for the St, Mary’s Catholic Church Catfish Dinner Friday, March 4. Doors will open at 5:39 p.m. There will be a silent auction, gun raffle, refreshments etc.

Grimes County Commissioners Court meetings are the first and third Wednesday of the month. Meetings have moved to the new Grimes County Criminal Justice & Business Center, 270 FM 149, Anderson.

The annual Texas Farm Bureau Photo Contest is an op portunity for members to share their best pictures with the entire Lone Star State and maybe even win a cash prize. To enter the contest, you must be a Texas Farm Bureau member or an immediate family member of a Texas Farm Bureau member and a resident of Texas. An immediate family member would be a spouse, child, sibling, or parent, and includes relations by marriage. Entries are due June 1. Visit https://txfb.us/photocontest22 for more details.

Navasota Farmers Market will be held Saturday, March 12, from 9 a.m. till 1 p.m. at Navasota Public Library. New vendors will also be at the market.

Early voting for the 2022 Primary Election began Monday, Feb. 14. Final day to request a ballot by mail is Feb. 18. Early voting ends Feb. 25. Early voting locations include Grimes County Courthouse, 100 South Main Street in Anderson and at the Navasota Center, 101 Stadium Drive in Navasota. Regular voting hours are 8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Extended voting hours are Tuesday, Feb. 25, from 7 a.m. till 7 p.m. Election day is Tuesday, March 1. All voting locations are closed Monday, Feb. 21, for Presidents Day.

Black History began in Chicago during the summer of 1915. Conceived by Historian Carter G Woodson who proposed marking a time to honor African Americans and raise awareness of Black History. February was chosen primarily because the second week of the month coincides with the birthdays of both Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln. It’s celebrated from Feb. 1-March 1. “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere,” Martin Luther King. Happy Black History Month!
