Our 16-year-old granddaughter, Abbygail Branch, and three of her friends from College Station decided to camp out Saturday night in our pasture. Her dad, Clint Branch, helped them put the tent up and her mom, Diana, helped set up the food stations and fire pit area. Lord, they brought enough food to last all week. For supper that evening they planned to roast hot dogs over the fire, but we had to start the fire. No guys were around. I used to camp quite a bit but that was years ago, and I didn’t want to be the one to start the fire. I wasn’t a girl scout either. With Don coaching me over the phone we got the fire going enough to roast the hot dogs but that was about it. Anyway, the girls had a blast. It gave me a happy heart that teenagers these days would break away long enough from their phones and iPads to enjoy nature as we did growing up.
Our family mourns the passing of a good man and good friend, Lanny Moriarty. He gained his wings late Friday night, Nov. 10, and left us all behind. Lanny has suffered with dementia for many years. In April 2014, Lanny was honored in Montgomery Co. for 42 years of public service starting in law enforcement with the Houston Police Department in 1971. His various assignments included the Traffic Division, Special Operations Group, Dignitary Protection Squad, and the Auto Theft Division.
He retired after 21 years but returned as a peace officer with Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, serving as an Auto Theft Detective from 1992 to 1994. His expertise in this field resulted in a promotion to Lieutenant overseeing a five-county auto theft task force unit which included Montgomery, Grimes, Polk, San Jacinto, and Walker counties. After another decade in law enforcement, Lanny ran for, and was elected to Precinct 1 Montgomery County Justice of the Peace. He took the oath of office Jan. 1, 2003. He served 12 years on the bench and over three decades in law enforcement before finally retiring. This legend will be greatly missed but so many memories will never leave us.
