Prevent veteran suicide
Whitehall News
It is that time of year again, the 2019 Grimes County Pecan Sales. I recently saw a posting on Facebook regarding selling nuts so I figured that I should consider hiding at home for some time! Seriously, D’Lynn Robbins, member of the Courtney-Whitehall 4-H, will be selling these items and you can text or call her mom Linda, for more information. The contact number is 979-219-0579 and the deadline is Oct. 1.
Did you know it is estimated that 22 veterans commit suicide every day? Suicide Awareness month began in 2007 and the Veterans of Foreign War Posts and Auxiliaries consider Sept. 10 as the official awareness date. A blue teardrop is the symbol used by auxiliaries to open a conversation to bring this critical issue to attention. The Veterans Crisis Line is 1-800-273-8255, or you can text 838255. If an auxiliary member is around and offers you a teardrop, please wear it for awareness. Thank you.
I did it! I rode in the bass boat finally and after the initial shock of the speed, I was okay. My son-in-law said he was only going 25 mph, but I know he was lying to me. I think it was more like 60. I was holding onto the handle on the side of the boat and Bree’s knee. I sure hope I didn’t bruise her knee!
Notice: Zion Lutheran Church will be hosting a fundraiser Sunday, Sept. 22, beginning at 11:30 a.m. and serving food until it is all gone. There will be brisket, sausage, green beans, potatoes and tea. A free will donation jar will be available. The net proceeds benefit the Anderson-Shiro ISD and Io-la ISD nurse’s stations. The activities for the children include a playground, slip and slide and other games.
Don’t forget; Salem Lutheran Ladies Circle is collecting socks for the nursing homes. If you are interested in donating these items, please feel free to call me and I will help arrange collection. Thank you.
Some of you may know my neighbor, Kathy Cave Wells. She has been diagnosed with that terrible word that begins with “C.” Please add her to your prayer list.
The Grimes VFW Post 4006 will be 75 years old Jan. 7, 2020. They are planning to have a celebration for this occasion. More information will come.
Scholarships are also available through the Veterans of Foreign Wars organization on the local, district, state and national level. If a student wins one, their application is forwarded upward. Even though the local level grants a small scholarship, the student could win much more as the student wins the other levels. We offer contests for patriotic art for the much younger students also. Interested? Give me a call for more info.
