As the name implies, this event was scheduled to go over the most recent developments in the long battle TAHSR has been fighting against the government, Amtrak, and other entities involved in the High-Speed Rail project from Houston to Dallas.

Having viewed the detailed budget presentation before, followed by vigorous discussion at the August 28 workshop, council moved quickly to approve the first reading of Ordinance No. 1029-23, adopting the FY 202324 budget with a show-of-hands record vote.

After public hearings which elicited citizen comments about salary inequities for women and law enforcement, commissioners passed both the $36,337,773.55 balanced budget and the $0.450339 per $100 valuation tax rate with 4-1 record votes. Pct. 2 Commissioner David Tullos cast the dissenting votes.

Read moreSunday, Sept. 10 was a special day in our household. It was 25 years ago that day in 1998 when Don was appointed as the new Grimes County Sheriff. He had been asked to put his name in the hat for the appointment so after much discussion with family Don decided to take the dive. He was on duty at Harris County Sheriff’s Office when he got a call from the county saying a special Commissioner’s Court would be in session that afternoon to decide who would be appointed. That particular week he had put in 25 years with Harris County. Little did he know at that time that he would be the Sheriff of Grimes County the next 25 years of his life.
