Sometime between the 1870 and 1880 U. S. Census, Solomon Rubenstein along with his wife and seven children came to live in Millican, a short distance north of Navasota along the railroad line. The census record shows that Rubenstein, a store clerk, was an immigrant born in Russia, while his wife and all seven children were born in England.
Read moreIola Food Pantry, held at the Iola Missionary Baptist Church Fellowship Hall, was open Saturday, Jan. 15, on a cold and windy day. There was a good number of workers present to give out a variety of food to approximately 40 people and families in the Iola area. Items given out included watermelon, grapefruit, bread and canned goods. Anyone who needs a helping hand can come to the pantry the third Saturday of the month. They will be open Saturday, Feb. 19, from 9-11 a.m. Everyone is welcome.

Well, Somerville and Snook have this ongoing issue, too. As I see people across the court on the home side, I actually wave at people and my daughter gets a text from the home side, “your mother is at the door!” Diana Lara was on the opposite side also and she lives right down the road from me.

If the plant grows as a bush, I call it a blackberry. If it vines along the ground, I call it a dewberry. That’s not a scientific reason but it’s the only one I’ve got. I use both in the same ways.
Read moreGraveside services for Mary Jane Neal Robinson were held Saturday, Jan. 8, in Evergreen Cemetery. She was born Feb. 13, 1938 to Brewer and Francis Neal. She passed away Jan. 3, after a short illness. Mary married Kenneth Dale Robinson and they had two daughters, Katherine, who later married Tim Carson and Karen who married Troy Smith. She was preceded in death by her husband who died Nov. 28, 2017. The service was under the direction of her pastor, Rev. Matt Higginbotham. Prior to the service, family and friends were served a meal in the Evergreen Baptist Church Fellowship Hall. Remember her family members and friends in your prayers.
