Richards Civic Club and Richards Volunteer Fire Department have put together a community tailgating party at Teague Park, right behind the Richards VFD station - Sunday July Fourth, starting at 5 p.m. This is a first-time tailgate party for the two groups, both hoping to have a big turnout. Bring your lawn chairs, lawn games, snacks, drinks, and BBQ pits!

Hope everyone had a safe, wonderful and relaxing Memorial Day weekend - something we all needed. Summer vacations are now in progress. Our family will soon be going to Corpus Christi for the annual “Hoffart” family vacation. Counting the little and big ones too, if nothing happens there will be 32 of us in attendance. Can’t wait!

It’s been a big week in Richards - Friday RISD Seniors were honored as they walked the stage for their final act as Panthers. This group of 17 young adults have plans that range from Agricultural Science, Social Media Marketing, to Cyber Security and Government protection. Guest speaker for the RISD graduation was be Robert Frazier, brother to History Teacher for RISD Timothy Frazier. Robert Frazier has a background working for the US Government with a specialty in securities and policies. While his brother Timothy Frazier has worked for RISD for several years and works with students to teach U.S. and local history as well as important civics for local government.

The graduation party for Kaleigh was nice. Her Aunt Katie opened her home for Kaleigh’s friends and family members. I believe her grandmother, Kathy Wendt, said the banana pudding was her Aunt Ann’s recipe and it sure was good. Jordan and I eyed that bowl for some time! Kalem, are you with me?

The Light House Sober Living has free groceries at the Relay Station Event Center in Plantersville the third Thursday of each month. To qualify you must be a resident of the Plantersville/Stoneham area, have proof of income, and identification is required. Volunteers are needed, and mask are required while loading. The big news this week was the house fire on FM 244. The house that belonged to Shirley Douthitt Keown caught fire Wednesday, May 19, about 2 a.m. and burned to the ground. The mobile home beside it was saved. Neither the house or mobile home have been lived in for some time. Iola Fire Department responded to the fire.

In Grimes County, beginning as early as 1834 with the Texas provisional government, postal routes began soon followed by stagecoaches. Fanthorp Inn at Anderson was the first, followed by the Camp Inn, just east of what became the town of Navasota. The last was the Freeman Inn built in 1856 on Navasota’s Washington Avenue shortly before the railroad reached Navasota.

Mackie shares that the Bedias Women’s Club will hold its first meeting in more than a year, next Thursday, May 27, at 2 p.m. at the Bedias Civic Center. All Bedias area women are invited and encouraged to attend. We are hopeful that most folks will have had the vaccine that want to take it and that we will be able to fellowship and celebrate again for our regular meetings.
